Minecraft Snapshot: Multi-Mob Leashing Update

Teyla
Apr 22, 2025 · 3 min read

Minecraft's latest Java snapshot (and the upcoming Bedrock preview) completely reworks leads. The new mechanics let you create roaming herds, aerial caravans, and tidy stables without turning yourself into the center of a tangled web. Below is a practical tour of every change so you can start experimenting right away.

Mass-Leashing 101 - How To Walk a Zoo

Crouch-click two leashable mobs and they will tether to each other instead of you. Keep chaining as many as you like:

  1. Horse convoys trotting home from the meadow

  2. Goats, foxes, and cats meandering through the spruce forest

  3. That endless parade of chickens you accidentally adopted

Baby mobs can still attach only to players; they require supervision. Leads will snap when stretched too far, and players remain unleashable.

Hitching Posts, Hulls and High Fliers

  1. Boats and chest boats
Lash a herd to a boat, hop aboard, and row across the ocean without constant seat swapping.

  2. Fences 2.0
Sneak-click a fence knot to pull one mob off the post and onto you. Add more leads without breaking the knot, or snip it with shears to clear the hitch in one go.

  3. Happy ghasts (experimental)
Ghasts are leashable. Suspend a chest boat beneath a grinning ghast and you have a living blimp for your sky base.

Borrowing Leads Like a Professional

Right-click any unowned lead knot on a wandering trader's llamas to claim it. Leads tagged to another player still require permission or old-fashioned crafting.

Shears: Your New Undo Button

Snip any leash or ghast harness with shears to free a specific mob without breaking the entire chain. Shears respect lead ownership, so other players' leads are protected.

How To Test It Today

  1. Java Edition: Install the latest snapshot in the Minecraft Launcher, then enable experimental features when creating or editing a world.

  2. Bedrock Edition: Preview and beta builds with these changes are listed as "coming soon" in the Insider Hub.
